How to Trace Japanese American Ancestry

Many Japanese Americans begin ancestry research with only a relative’s name, an immigration year, or a possible prefecture of origin. That can still be enough.

Useful starting clues include: immigrant names (and kanji if known), ports of entry such as Hawaii or the West Coast, approximate immigration dates, and family stories about hometowns in Japan.
